When your freight forwarder asks for your carton dimensions they are calculating your cubic meters to price your LCL shipment or determine which container size your FCL shipment requires. Getting this number wrong means getting a quote that does not match the final invoice.
CBM stands for cubic meter. It is the standard unit of volume measurement in international shipping. What CBM Means in Shipping and Why Carriers Use It
CBM stands for Cubic Meter. One CBM is the volume of a cube measuring one meter on each side. In shipping CBM represents the total volume your cargo occupies in a container, truck, or aircraft hold.
Ocean freight carriers price by volume rather than weight for most cargo because space is the constrained resource on a container vessel. A container that is full cannot take another shipment regardless of whether the cargo is light or heavy. Pricing by CBM reflects the real cost driver which is the space your cargo occupies not how much it weighs.
This is different from domestic parcel carriers like UPS and FedEx which use dimensional weight to convert volume into a weight equivalent before pricing. Ocean freight skips the conversion and prices directly on CBM for most LCL shipments.
The exception is the W/M rule which stands for Weight or Measure. Under this rule carriers charge whichever is higher between the cargo weight in metric tons and the cargo volume in CBM. One metric ton equals one CBM under this rule. A 2 CBM shipment that weighs 3 metric tons bills on 3 tons not 2 CBM because the weight exceeds the volume. This applies primarily to dense heavy cargo like metal components and machinery. For most ecommerce goods which are lighter than 1,000 kg per cubic meter CBM is the billing basis.
The CBM Formula in Three Unit Systems
CBM is always calculated as Length multiplied by Width multiplied by Height. The unit system determines how you express the result.
In meters (direct calculation):
CBM = Length (m) × Width (m) × Height (m)
Example: A carton measuring 1.2m long, 0.8m wide, and 0.9m high.
1.2 × 0.8 × 0.9 = 0.864 CBM per carton
For 10 identical cartons: 0.864 × 10 = 8.64 CBM total
In centimeters:
CBM = Length (cm) × Width (cm) × Height (cm) ÷ 1,000,000
Example: A carton measuring 120cm × 80cm × 90cm.
120 × 80 × 90 = 864,000
864,000 ÷ 1,000,000 = 0.864 CBM per carton
In inches:
CBM = Length (in) × Width (in) × Height (in) ÷ 61,023.7
Example: A carton measuring 47.2 × 31.5 × 35.4 inches.
47.2 × 31.5 × 35.4 = 52,594
52,594 ÷ 61,023.7 = 0.862 CBM per carton
For mixed shipments with different carton sizes:
Calculate CBM for each carton size separately then sum the results.
Carton A: 0.5m × 0.4m × 0.3m × 50 units = 3.0 CBM
Carton B: 0.8m × 0.6m × 0.5m × 20 units = 4.8 CBM
Total shipment CBM: 3.0 + 4.8 = 7.8 CBM

How Ocean Carriers Price LCL Shipments Using CBM
LCL stands for Less than Container Load. When your shipment does not fill an entire container you share space with other shippers in a consolidated container. The carrier prices your share of the container based on the CBM your cargo occupies.
2026 LCL rate ranges confirmed from freight intelligence sources:
China to US West Coast: $65 to $85 per CBM
China to US East Coast: $80 to $100 per CBM
China to Europe (Hamburg, Rotterdam): $70 to $95 per CBM
China to Australia: $90 to $120 per CBM
These are base ocean freight rates. LCL shipments also incur additional charges on top of the base rate:
Origin charges: container freight station handling, documentation, and export customs. Typically $40 to $80 per shipment.
Destination charges: container freight station handling, customs clearance, and last mile delivery. Typically $80 to $150 per shipment.
Fuel surcharges: carrier-specific percentage applied to the base ocean rate.

The total cost of an LCL shipment is base rate multiplied by CBM plus fixed origin and destination charges. For small shipments under 3 CBM the fixed charges can exceed the base freight charge making LCL expensive on a per-CBM basis.

The W/M Rule – Weight or Measure Whichever Is Higher
The W/M (Weight or Measure) rule is the pricing principle most ocean carriers and freight forwarders apply to LCL shipments. Under this rule the carrier charges on whichever is greater: the actual weight of your cargo in metric tons or the volume in CBM.
The conversion rate is 1 metric ton equals 1 CBM. This means:
If your 5 CBM shipment weighs 3 metric tons (3,000 kg) you are billed on 5 CBM because volume exceeds weight.
If your 5 CBM shipment weighs 6 metric tons (6,000 kg) you are billed on 6 W/M because weight exceeds volume.
For most ecommerce products the W/M rule results in billing on volume. Consumer goods, apparel, electronics accessories, and home goods typically weigh well under 1,000 kg per cubic meter. A 5 CBM shipment of apparel might weigh only 800 kg or 0.8 metric tons. Volume wins at 5 CBM.
For dense products the calculation flips. Metal hardware, tools, ceramics, and heavy machinery can exceed 1,000 kg per cubic meter. A 2 CBM shipment of metal components weighing 3,000 kg (3 metric tons) bills on weight at 3 W/M.
The practical action: always weigh your cartons and calculate both your total CBM and your total weight in metric tons before requesting a freight quote. Provide both numbers to your forwarder. They will apply the W/M rule and quote on whichever is higher.
Container Capacity – How Many CBM Fit in Each Size
Understanding container CBM capacity helps you determine whether your shipment is better suited to LCL or FCL and which container size is right for FCL shipments.

The High Cube container provides 13 percent more volume than a standard 40-foot container at a similar price. For lightweight bulky cargo the High Cube is almost always worth the minimal premium. For dense heavy cargo that is constrained by payload weight rather than volume the standard 40-foot General Purpose is sufficient.
Practical loading capacity is lower than gross CBM because irregular cargo shapes, packing materials, and loading requirements leave gaps. Plan your FCL shipments assuming 85 to 90 percent of gross container CBM is usable in practice.
The 15 CBM Rule – When to Switch from LCL to FCL
The most important decision the CBM calculation informs is whether to ship LCL or FCL. The 15 CBM rule is the industry-standard decision threshold.
Shipments under 15 CBM: LCL is almost always cheaper. You pay only for the space you use. Fixed origin and destination charges are spread across multiple shippers sharing the container.
Shipments over 15 CBM: FCL often becomes cheaper and better. A 20-foot container costs a fixed amount per container regardless of how much you fill it. At 15 CBM and above the per-CBM cost of an LCL shipment frequently exceeds the equivalent cost of a 20-foot FCL container.
The crossover calculation:
LCL total cost = (CBM × per-CBM rate) + origin charges + destination charges
FCL total cost = container rate + origin charges + destination charges
If LCL total cost exceeds FCL total cost at your CBM volume switch to FCL.
Example at 14 CBM (China to US West Coast):
LCL: 14 CBM × $75 per CBM = $1,050 plus $200 origin and destination charges = $1,250 total
FCL 20ft: $2,800 container rate plus $300 charges = $3,100 total
LCL wins at $1,250 versus $3,100.
Example at 28 CBM (China to US West Coast):
LCL: 28 CBM × $75 per CBM = $2,100 plus $200 charges = $2,300 total
FCL 20ft: $2,800 plus $300 charges = $3,100 total
LCL still wins marginally but FCL offers better cargo security and faster port clearance.
