What is Dimensional Weight?

Dimensional weight (DIM weight) is a pricing technique used by commercial freight services (including courier and postal services) which uses an estimated weight that is calculated from the length, width, and height of a package.

Carriers like UPS and FedEx calculate shipping costs based on the greater of the actual weight or the dimensional weight. If your package is light but large, you will be billed for its volume rather than its mass.

How to Calculate It

The standard formula used by most carriers is:

(Length × Width × Height) / Divisor = DIM Weight

The divisor is set by the carrier. For 2026, the standard divisors are 139 for most commercial shipments and 166 for retail or international shipments.

Common Carrier Divisors (2026)

UPS Domestic 139
FedEx Domestic 139
USPS (Priority/Ground) 166
DHL Express 139
UPS/FedEx International 166
Pro Tip: Always round your measurements up to the nearest whole inch before calculating to match how carrier scanners process your parcel.
