What is Dimensional Weight?
Dimensional weight (DIM weight) is a pricing technique used by commercial freight services (including courier and postal services) which uses an estimated weight that is calculated from the length, width, and height of a package.
Carriers like UPS and FedEx calculate shipping costs based on the greater of the actual weight or the dimensional weight. If your package is light but large, you will be billed for its volume rather than its mass.

Both carriers also apply ceiling rounding since August 2025 which means every fractional inch rounds up to the next whole inch before the DIM weight calculation. A box measuring 11.1 x 8.3 x 5.7 inches calculates as 12 x 9 x 6 after ceiling rounding. This increases the calculated DIM weight compared to pre-August 2025 calculations. Any DIM weight calculator that does not apply ceiling rounding will understate your actual UPS and FedEx billable weight.
Did USPS change its DIM weight rules in 2026?
Yes. USPS changed its Ground Advantage DIM weight divisor from 166 to 139 and introduced ceiling rounding effective July 12 2026. These changes apply only to packages over 1 cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches). Packages under 1 cubic foot still ship on actual weight with no DIM weight calculation on USPS Ground Advantage. The July 12 2026 changes brought USPS dimensional weight pricing in line with UPS and FedEx for larger packages.
