Common mistakes
- Measuring the empty carton before packing and sealing.
- Calling the shortest panel “length” instead of the longest side.
- Assuming Additional Handling and Large Package always add together on UPS/FedEx — they do not; Large Package replaces AH.
- Forgetting fees multiply by identical package count.

What triggers UPS Additional Handling?
UPS Additional Handling applies when billed dimensions (each side rounded up) have a longest side over 48 in, a second-longest side over 30 in, actual weight over 50 lb, or volume over 10,368 in³. DimMath stores those thresholds, not the published dollar amount.
Difference between oversize and additional handling?
Additional Handling is the lower size-based accessorial. Large Package / oversize uses a higher volume (17,280 in³), 110 lb, or length-plus-girth band. If both would apply, UPS and FedEx bill the higher Large Package charge only.
Do UPS surcharges stack?
Size-based Additional Handling and Large Package do not stack: the higher Large Package charge replaces Additional Handling. Other invoice lines such as residential or fuel are separate and are not priced as live ZIP lookups in this tool.
Does USPS charge oversize fees?
USPS commercial Notice 123 (effective July 12, 2026) prices nonstandard length 22–30 in at $4.50, length over 30 in at $10.00, and volume over 2 ft³ (3,456 in³) at $21.00. Length plus girth above 130 in is refused.
Can I negotiate surcharges away?
Published maximums in this calculator are list accessorials, not negotiated account rates. Some shippers obtain lower additional-handling or large-package amounts in a carrier contract. DimMath does not quote account rates. Confirm the invoice.
