Shopify Shipping Rates Explained – Carrier Accounts and Discounts

Shopify gives you three ways to charge customers for shipping: flat rates you set manually, calculated rates pulled live from carrier APIs, and free shipping with rules that control when it applies. Each works differently, costs you differently, and affects checkout conversion differently.

Understanding which rate type to use and how Shopify’s built-in carrier discounts work is the difference between a shipping setup that protects margin and one that bleeds it order by order.

The Three Shopify Shipping Rate Types

Flat rate shipping:
You set a fixed shipping price that applies to every order within a shipping zone regardless of weight, size, or destination within that zone. A $5.99 flat rate charges $5.99 whether the order is a single light item or three heavy ones.

Flat rates are simple to set up and predictable for customers. They work well when your product mix is consistent in weight and size. They break down when you sell products with widely varying shipping costs. A single flat rate that covers your heaviest product overcharges customers on light orders. A rate calibrated to your lightest product loses money on heavy orders.

Use flat rates when your average shipping cost per order is consistent and you want checkout simplicity.

Calculated carrier rates:
Shopify pulls live rates from connected carrier APIs based on the customer’s destination, the order weight, and the package dimensions you have entered for your products. The customer sees the real carrier rate at checkout.

Calculated rates are accurate and eliminate the guesswork of flat rate calibration. They require accurate product weights and dimensions in your Shopify catalog. A product entered at 0.3 lbs when it actually ships at 0.7 lbs produces an underquoted rate at checkout and a margin loss on every order.

Calculated carrier rates require specific Shopify plans. More on this below.

Free shipping:
Free shipping with a threshold or without conditions. Free shipping with a minimum order value is the most common e-commerce shipping strategy. It increases average order value because customers add items to qualify and it eliminates checkout abandonment from surprise shipping fees.

Free shipping is not actually free. The cost is either absorbed into product pricing or paid from margin. The math of setting the right threshold is covered in detail later in this guide.

Shopify Shipping Built-In Discounts – What You Get and What Is Missing

Shopify Shipping is Shopify’s built-in label purchasing program. It provides pre-negotiated discounted rates with three carriers accessible directly from your Shopify admin.

Carriers included in Shopify Shipping:
USPS: up to 88% off retail rates. Covers Ground Advantage, Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express, First Class, and Media Mail.
UPS: discounted rates for ground and air domestic services.
DHL Express: international express rates.

FedEx is not included in Shopify Shipping. This is the most common misconception about the built-in program. If you need FedEx for any shipments, you must either connect your own FedEx account through carrier-calculated shipping or use a third-party app. For the comparison of which third-party apps provide FedEx access, see Best Shipping Software for Shopify 2026.

Discount depth by plan: Shopify flattened most shipping discount tiers in 2024. All plans from Basic and above now access the same core Shopify Shipping rates. The Advanced plan unlocks the deepest discounts at up to 88% off retail on USPS. Basic plan merchants access up to 77% off. The difference matters more on UPS than USPS because UPS retail rates are significantly higher than USPS retail to begin with.

There is no monthly fee for Shopify Shipping. You pay only for postage at the discounted rate when you purchase a label. Labels are purchased through your Shopify admin and deducted from your Shopify balance or charged to your payment method on file.

Carrier-Calculated Shipping – Plan Requirements and Own Accounts

Carrier-calculated shipping (CCS) displays real-time carrier rates at checkout based on the customer’s address, order weight, and product dimensions. It is the most accurate way to charge customers what shipping actually costs.

Plan requirements for CCS:
Shopify Advanced and Shopify Plus: CCS included natively at no extra cost.
Shopify Grow (formerly Shopify): CCS available with annual billing or for an additional monthly fee.
Shopify Basic: CCS not available natively. Requires an upgrade or third-party app workaround.

This plan limitation catches sellers off guard when they try to set up calculated rates on a Basic plan and discover the feature is not available without paying more.

Connecting your own carrier account:
If you have negotiated rates with UPS, FedEx, or USPS that are better than Shopify’s built-in discounts, you can connect your own carrier account to Shopify and display your negotiated rates at checkout.

To connect your own account: go to Shopify admin, Settings, Shipping and Delivery, Carrier Accounts, and add your carrier credentials. Shopify then pulls live rates from your account when customers check out rather than from Shopify’s pre-negotiated rate pool.

This is relevant for sellers shipping 500 or more packages per month who have negotiated 20 to 30 percent below commercial rates with UPS or FedEx. Shopify’s built-in UPS rates are commercial rates. A negotiated account at 25 percent below commercial beats Shopify’s built-in UPS rates on every label.

DIM Weight in Shopify Checkout – Why Product Dimensions Matter

Shopify applies dimensional weight pricing at checkout when calculated carrier rates are active. The same DIM weight formula that carriers use on outbound shipments applies to the rates Shopify displays to customers.

DIM Weight = (Length × Width × Height) ÷ DIM Divisor

If your product dimensions in Shopify are wrong, the rate shown at checkout is wrong. If dimensions are understated, you undercharge customers and absorb the difference. If dimensions are overstated, you overcharge customers and risk cart abandonment.

Two common errors that cause checkout rate problems:

Using product dimensions instead of packed dimensions. The Shopify catalog should store the dimensions of the product in its shipping packaging, not the product alone. A supplement bottle that is 3 × 3 × 6 inches in its retail box ships in a 5 × 5 × 8 inch carton with padding. The carton dimensions are what carriers measure. Enter the carton dimensions.

Not updating dimensions when packaging changes. If you redesign packaging or switch to a different box size, update the Shopify product dimensions immediately. Stale dimensions in the catalog produce stale rates at checkout indefinitely.

The DIM Weight Calculator shows the billable weight and estimated carrier rate for any set of dimensions across all four carriers. Use it to verify your Shopify catalog dimensions produce the correct rate before your store goes live.

Free Shipping Threshold Math and Handling Fee Strategy

Free shipping threshold math:

Setting a free shipping threshold requires knowing your average shipping cost per order and your average order value. The threshold should be set high enough that most orders requiring free shipping have enough margin to absorb the shipping cost.

Formula: Free Shipping Threshold = Average Shipping Cost ÷ Target Absorption Rate

Example: average shipping cost per order $8.50, target absorption rate 15% of order value (meaning shipping cost is 15% of the order that qualifies for free shipping).

Threshold = $8.50 ÷ 0.15 = $56.67. Round to $55 or $60.

At a $60 threshold, every order over $60 gets free shipping. The $8.50 average shipping cost is 14.2% of the $60 minimum. Your margin on a $60 order absorbs $8.50 more comfortably than on a $30 order.

The psychological lift: research consistently shows free shipping thresholds increase average order value as customers add items to qualify. A store with an $18 AOV that sets a $30 free shipping threshold typically sees AOV rise to $25 to $28 as customers add one more item. The shipping cost is partially offset by the higher revenue per order.

Handling fee markup strategy:

Shopify allows you to add a handling fee markup on top of calculated carrier rates. This fee can be a flat dollar amount or a percentage of the calculated rate. It does not appear as a separate line at checkout. It is added to the shipping rate the customer sees.

Use a handling fee to recover packaging material cost and pick-and-pack labor that is not included in the carrier rate. If your packaging costs $0.60 per order and packing labor costs $0.40, a $1.00 flat handling fee added to calculated rates recovers that cost on every order without displaying a separate handling charge that might put customers off.

To set up a handling fee: Shopify admin, Settings, Shipping and Delivery, edit the carrier rate, Handling Fee section. Enter a flat amount or percentage. Save.

FAQ

Q: What shipping rates does Shopify Shipping include in 2026?
A: Shopify Shipping provides pre-negotiated discounted rates with USPS, UPS, and DHL Express. USPS discounts reach up to 88% off retail on Advanced and Plus plans, up to 77% on Basic. FedEx is not included in Shopify Shipping. If you need FedEx, connect your own FedEx account through carrier-calculated shipping (requires Advanced or Plus plan) or use a third-party app. There is no monthly fee for Shopify Shipping. You pay only for labels at the discounted rate.

Q: What Shopify plan do I need for carrier-calculated shipping?
A: Carrier-calculated shipping that displays real-time carrier rates at checkout is included natively on Shopify Advanced and Shopify Plus. On Shopify Grow it is available with annual billing or for an additional monthly fee. Shopify Basic does not support carrier-calculated shipping natively. Sellers on Basic who need calculated rates must upgrade their plan or use a third-party shipping app that provides rate calculation at checkout.

Q: How does DIM weight affect Shopify shipping rates at checkout?
A: Shopify applies dimensional weight pricing when carrier-calculated rates are active. The DIM weight formula (Length × Width × Height ÷ carrier divisor) is applied to your product dimensions to determine billable weight. If your Shopify catalog has incorrect or outdated product dimensions, the rate shown at checkout will be wrong. Always enter the packed shipping dimensions, not the product dimensions alone, and update dimensions whenever packaging changes. Use the DIM Weight Calculator to verify your dimensions produce the correct carrier rate.

Q: How do I set a free shipping threshold on Shopify?
A: Go to Shopify admin, Settings, Shipping and Delivery, then add or edit a shipping zone. Add a free shipping rate with a minimum order value condition. The threshold should be set at a level where the average shipping cost represents an acceptable percentage of the qualifying order value. A common formula: divide your average shipping cost per order by your target absorption rate. If average shipping is $8.50 and you want it to represent 15% of qualifying orders, the threshold is $8.50 ÷ 0.15 = $56.67. Round to the nearest $5 or $10 for a clean customer-facing number.
