Why USPS Cubic Pricing Is Not Showing at Shopify Checkout
A Shopify merchant saves over $3 per package using a third-party app to access USPS Cubic rates. The same rates are not available in their Shopify shipping center despite using Shopify’s built-in carrier-calculated shipping. They are frustrated having to leave Shopify to purchase labels every day.
This is not a configuration error. It is not a plan limitation. USPS Cubic pricing is simply not available natively through Shopify Shipping. It never has been. Most merchants discover this after spending hours trying to find a setting that does not exist.
This guide explains why, what your options are, and how to access Cubic rates without abandoning Shopify’s order management workflow.
Why USPS Cubic Is Not Available in Shopify Shipping
Shopify Shipping provides pre-negotiated discounted rates with USPS through its commercial rate agreement. Those rates cover USPS Ground Advantage standard pricing, Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express, First Class, and Media Mail. They do not cover USPS Cubic pricing.
USPS Cubic is a separate rate structure that requires a specific contract type with USPS. Historically these contracts required high annual shipping volume, putting them out of reach for most small businesses. Third-party shipping platforms like Pirate Ship, Shippo, and ShipStation negotiated access to Cubic rates through their aggregated volume and passed that access to their users.
Shopify’s built-in shipping integration uses its own USPS commercial rate agreement which does not include Cubic. Shopify has not added native Cubic support despite multiple merchant requests in the Shopify community forum going back several years. As of mid-2026 there is no indication this will change in the near term.
The practical result: if you rely solely on Shopify Shipping for label creation you are leaving Cubic savings on every qualifying package. For packages that qualify for Cubic the savings versus standard Ground Advantage are significant, particularly at Zone 3 and above.

How Much You Are Leaving on the Table
You've read the theory—now see the actual math for your packages. Use our Carrier Savings Engine to see if you can unlock hidden USPS Cubic rates by shrinking your packaging.
Check My Savings →Before choosing a fix it helps to know what the gap costs you per order.
USPS Cubic pricing assigns a flat rate by volume tier based on package dimensions rather than weight. A package qualifying for Ground Advantage Cubic costs a flat rate regardless of actual weight up to 20 lbs. The savings versus standard Ground Advantage rates increase with zone distance.
At Zone 5 the difference between standard Ground Advantage and Ground Advantage Cubic on a qualifying package is meaningful per shipment. At Zone 7 and Zone 8 the gap is larger. Across 200 qualifying shipments per month the total monthly saving from accessing Cubic versus paying standard Ground Advantage rates is significant.
Use the USPS Cubic Calculator to check whether your specific packages qualify for Cubic pricing and see the rate comparison against standard Ground Advantage at your typical zones. If your packages qualify and you are shipping via Shopify Shipping without Cubic access, the calculator will show you exactly what you are overpaying per label.

Three Options to Access USPS Cubic From Shopify
Option 1: Use Pirate Ship for label creation (free, no monthly fee)
Pirate Ship is completely free and provides USPS Cubic rates automatically. When you enter package dimensions Pirate Ship detects cubic eligibility and displays the cubic rate alongside standard Ground Advantage. You purchase the label at the cubic rate and the saving is immediate.
The workflow: manage orders in Shopify as normal. When ready to ship go to Pirate Ship, import the order or enter the address manually, enter dimensions, purchase the cubic label. Mark the order as fulfilled in Shopify with the tracking number.
This is the workaround the frustrated merchant in the Shopify community thread was using. It requires leaving Shopify for label creation but costs nothing and provides immediate access to Cubic savings on every qualifying package. For sellers shipping 10 to 200 orders per month with qualifying package profiles, Pirate Ship is the most cost-effective solution.
Option 2: Use Shippo or ShipStation (paid, integrated with Shopify)
Shippo and ShipStation both provide USPS Cubic rates and integrate directly with Shopify. Orders sync automatically from Shopify. You purchase labels including Cubic rates inside the app. Tracking syncs back to Shopify automatically. The workflow stays within a connected ecosystem without manual order import.
Shippo: free starter tier for 30 labels per month. Pro at $17 per month for unlimited labels. Cubic rates included on all tiers.
ShipStation: starts at $14.99 per month for 50 shipments. Cubic rates included. Better automation and multi-channel support than Shippo at higher volume.
These apps solve the workflow friction of Option 1 at the cost of a monthly subscription. For sellers shipping above 50 orders per month where the manual Pirate Ship workflow creates bottlenecks, the subscription cost is typically recovered in Cubic savings within the first week.
Option 3: Use Calcurates or a carrier-calculated app that supports Cubic at checkout
If you want Cubic pricing to appear as an option for customers at checkout rather than just at label creation, you need a carrier-calculated shipping app that specifically supports Cubic rate display. Calcurates is one of the few apps that surfaces Cubic rates accurately at checkout based on package dimensions.
This option solves a different problem from Options 1 and 2. Options 1 and 2 give you Cubic access at label creation. Option 3 gives customers accurate Cubic-based shipping quotes at checkout, which prevents overcharging customers on shipping and reduces cart abandonment from inflated shipping estimates.
The requirement for Option 3 is accurate product dimensions entered in Shopify or the app’s product settings. Without correct dimensions the app cannot calculate whether the package qualifies for Cubic and will default to standard rates.
The Dimension Requirement – Why Cubic Often Does Not Calculate Even With an App
This is the second most common reason Cubic rates do not appear even after installing a third-party app.
USPS Cubic eligibility is based on packed exterior dimensions, not a Shopify product field. Under DMM 283.1.3.1 (Ground Advantage Cubic) and DMM 223.1.3.1 (Priority Mail Cubic), effective July 12, 2026:
- longest side 22 inches or under;
- weight 20 lb or under;
- volume 0.5 cubic feet or under for Priority Mail Cubic;
- volume 1.0 cubic feet or under for Ground Advantage Cubic.
The 18-inch longest-side limit is historical. It is not the current DMM rule.
For a shipping app to determine Cubic eligibility at checkout or label creation, it needs the package dimensions. If your products have no dimensions entered in Shopify or in the app’s product settings, the app cannot calculate cubic volume and defaults to standard weight-based rates.
Two dimension problems that prevent Cubic from appearing:
No dimensions entered: The most common issue. Shopify has no native product dimension fields. Dimensions must be entered via metafields or the shipping app’s own product dimension fields. If this step was skipped when setting up products, the app has no dimensions to work with and cannot qualify the package for Cubic.
Wrong dimensions entered: Product dimensions instead of packed box dimensions. Cubic eligibility is based on the exterior of the sealed shipping box, not the product itself. A candle measuring 3 × 3 × 6 inches ships in a 5 × 5 × 8 inch box. The 5 × 5 × 8 box is what needs to be entered for Cubic eligibility to calculate correctly.
Fix: measure the exterior of your sealed shipping box for each SKU. Enter those dimensions in your shipping app’s product dimension fields. For multi-item orders verify that the app correctly combines dimensions when calculating the cubic volume of the combined package.

The July 12, 2026 22-inch longest-side rule is in force
DMM 283.1.3.1 and DMM 223.1.3.1 set the longest side at 22 inches or under for Ground Advantage Cubic and Priority Mail Cubic. That is the current published rule as of the July 12, 2026 DMM, not a pending proposal.
Packages with a longest side of 19, 20, or 21 inches that failed under the old 18-inch limit should be re-checked. Measure the sealed box, round down to the nearest 0.25 inch per DMM 283.1.3.3 / 223.1.3.3, then confirm volume and weight.

FAQ
Q: Why is USPS Cubic pricing not showing at my Shopify checkout?
A: USPS Cubic pricing is not available natively through Shopify Shipping. Shopify’s built-in USPS rate agreement covers standard Ground Advantage, Priority Mail, and other standard services but does not include Cubic pricing. To access Cubic rates you need a third-party shipping app. Pirate Ship provides Cubic rates for free with no monthly subscription. Shippo provides Cubic rates starting at $17 per month with full Shopify integration. Use the USPS Cubic Calculator to check whether your packages qualify before choosing an app.
Q: How do I get USPS Cubic rates on Shopify without paying for an app?
A: Use Pirate Ship for label creation. Pirate Ship is completely free, provides USPS Cubic rates automatically when a package qualifies, and requires no monthly subscription. The workflow is: manage orders in Shopify as normal, go to Pirate Ship to purchase the cubic label, then mark the order as fulfilled in Shopify with the tracking number. This requires leaving Shopify for label creation but costs nothing and provides immediate access to Cubic savings on every qualifying package.
Q: Why are USPS Cubic rates not showing even after I installed a shipping app?
A: The most common cause is missing or incorrect product dimensions. USPS Cubic eligibility (DMM 283.1.3.1 / 223.1.3.1) uses packed exterior size: longest side 22 inches or under, weight 20 lb or under, and volume within the cubic service limit. If products have no dimensions or use product size instead of the sealed box, the app cannot qualify Cubic and defaults to weight-based rates. Measure the exterior of the sealed box for each SKU.
Q: What packages qualify for USPS Cubic pricing in 2026?
A: Under DMM 283.1.3.1 and DMM 223.1.3.1 (July 12, 2026): Ground Advantage Cubic is longest side 22 inches or under, 20 lb or under, and 1.0 cubic foot or under. Priority Mail Cubic is longest side 22 inches or under, 20 lb or under, and 0.5 cubic feet or under. See How to Qualify for USPS Cubic.
